MIDDLE GROVE - Mary Janet Packer, 99, entered eternal rest Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011.
She was born in the Ukraine, the daughter of the late John and Julia Pasichnyk.
Mary came to New York via Ellis Island with her parents at 2 years old. She lived almost her entire life in Barkersville, first in the home of her parents and later with her husband, Blaine G.L. Packer.
She was a graduate of Galway High School and traveled each day to school in a horse-drawn wagon.
Mary and Blaine ran a country store for many years next to their home and the Barkersville Pond until Blaine's death in 1976.
She leaves many friends in the towns of Providence and Barkersville. She was an inspiration to all of her family and friends, and they are all saddened by her parting, but happy at her entry into the next life.
Mary was a member of many organizations, including the Home Bureau. She was recognized by the governor for her term as town historian for the town of Providence from 1957 to 2010. For many years, she wrote monthly historical commentaries and reminiscences in the town of Providence magazine. Her interests were local history, antiques, gardening and participating in the life of her community and the Barkersville Christian Church.
She was predeceased by Howard Nolan, her companion of many years.
Mrs. Packer was the wife of the late Blaine G. L. Packer. She is survived by her younger brother, Andrew Page of Glovers-ville; her nieces and nieces-in-law, Joan Gerring, Rachel Page and Gina Page; her nephews and nephews-in-law, Allan Page of Poughkeepsie, John Page of Baltimore and Robert Gerring of Castleton-on-Hudson; and her great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews, Carter Page, Judy Street, Cary Dolan, Daniel Page, Stephen Page, Julia Street and Jonathan Dolan.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Elaine and Tarry Tusing for their loving care and compassion.
There will be no calling hours, and burial will be private for the family.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held on November 26th at 11:00 am at the Barkersville Christian Church.
